Candied Ginger / Crystallized Ginger Recipe

Sharing is caring!

Homemade Crystallized Ginger AKA Candied ginger with minimal ingredients is a must have in the closet due to its medicinal benefits. Crystallized ginger can reduce inflammation and relieve the pain associated with it! The sugary coating helps your kids eat them without much fuss. The medicinal benefits of ginger are so powerful, even a slightly crystallized sugary coating can’t negate its potency completely. This crystallized ginger recipe accents both the sweet and spicy notes of ginger while also softening its texture into a chewy treat.

What Is Ginger?

Ginger is a perennial herb native to China and India. It is obtained from the plant Zingiber officinale. It is one of the most revered medicines in Ayurveda. Ginger is often referred to as a root, but it is actually an underground stem called rhizome. Ginger is considered the ‘chest of medicine’ in Ayurveda due to its various health benefits.

Is ginger good for you?

Ayurved has been using ginger medicinally for centuries. Ginger is an extremely healthy herb with a variety of benefits.  Research shows that ginger is effective in treating upset stomachs, nausea, motion-sickness, pregnancy, lowering cholesterol and inflammation. Though, it does not warrant skipping going to the doctor.

Does candied ginger help heartburn or acid reflux?

The list of benefits of ginger is huge, it relieves indigestion, nausea, colic, gas, heartburn, morning sickness, and motion sickness. In addition, crystallized ginger seems to protect against ulcers, is helpful against internal parasites, and may even ease acid reflux. Tried and tested remedy for coughs is ginger with honey. Ginger compresses relieve sore muscles, stomach cramps, and swollen glands. This is great stuff!!

Honestly, this  Crystallized ginger has an amazing flavor!! It has the perfect combination of heat and sweet with a strong ginger taste.  Once you have made the crystallized ginger, don't throw the sweet ginger syrup. Add it while baking cake or cookies or even making chai.

How long does Candied Ginger last?

Store the crystallized ginger in an airtight container in a dark, cool place. This helps it to last for several months.

This ginger candy would make a great homemade gift. Or you could keep it for yourself and have an immune boosting ally all year around. Enjoy!

Okay, I have boiled and boiled and boiled some more my ginger pieces and they just haven’t reached the texture of crystallized ginger I have bought in the past. I am not sure what else to do? After 2 days of cooking I finally gave up, dried and coated with sugar. What’s crazy is after all this cooking to me, the ginger is still a bit too potent. Do u have any suggestions of what to do?

If you are slicing it thinly then no you don't have to peel. Wash and scrub the ginger and use. If cutting them in small cubes then yes peel it.

I grew ginger for the first time and getting ready to harvest it. Can I make this recipe right after harvest or do I need to dry the ginger first? Would love to give as gifts.
