Tostones, also known as patacones, are twice-fried plantains found in a lot of Latin American cuisine. Our tasty recipe for tostones uses the air fryer for a healthier version of this classic recipe.
GREEN PLANTAINS WATER SALT COOKING OIL SPRAY
Peel and cut the plantains into slices. When ready, soak in water and salt for 20 minutes. This will prevent browning and drying them out. Preheat the air fryer at 350°F.
Remove from the water and dry with a paper towel. Spray with cooking oil and place them into the basket in a single layer, leaving ½ inch space between each slice.
Air fry them for 5 minutes. Next, smash each slice with the bottom of a coffee mug or small pyrex bowl to flatten them into discs and spray with oil.
Air fry them again for 6 minutes or until crispy on the outside. Finally, remove the plantains and season them with salt and pepper.
You can serve the patacones with a side of avocado salsa, avocado crema, or ketchup and mayo.
