There are a few ways you can tell if an avocado is ripe or not. Here’s how to tell:

  • Gently squeeze the avocado. If it gives a bit but does not feel mushy, it is ready to use.
  • The color should appear dark green to almost black.
  • The skin on the avocado will be bumpy when it has ripened.

How to ripen avocados quickly

If you need to ripen an avocado quickly, you can try this simple method.

First, wrap the avocado in tin foil and place it on a baking sheet.

Bake the avocado at 200 degrees for 10 minutes or until it feels soft.  Now that you've put it in the oven, it can take up to an hour for the avocado to soften.

Once it has softened, place the avocado in the fridge until it cools off.

How to cut an avocado

Avocados have a large pit in the middle so you need to cut them carefully.

The best way to cut them is to cut them down the middle lengthwise. To do this, cut into the skin and push it in until you feel the pit.

Next, carefully work your knife around in a circle around the pit. Once you’ve worked around the entire avocado, carefully pull the two half apart. You can then use a spoon to remove the pit and scoop out the fruit.
