Vegan Avocado Fries Ingredients
When you are ready to make these fries and sauce, here is what you will need to get:
- Avocados - We look for ripe but still slightly firm avocados.
- Flours - We use a combination of fine Almond Flour and cornmeal to make a simple coating for the fries.
- Seasonings - For the fries, you’ll need paprika, salt, and garlic powder.
- Non-Dairy Milk - We use Almond milk, but you can use your preferred type to make the flours stick to the fries.
- Avocado oil spray - This spray will help give the fries a crispy outside as they cook.
- Dipping sauce base - To make the base of the dipping sauce, you’ll need both mayonnaise and sour cream.
- Chipotle chiles - The chilies add some spice and smokey flavor to the dipping sauce.
- Seasonings for dipping sauce - You’ll need cumin powder, black pepper, and fresh cilantro.
- Freshly squeezed lime juice - You’ll need this for the dipping sauce.
How to Pick the Perfect Avocado for Avocado Fries
When you look for an avocado for fries, here are few tips to get the best one:
- First, feel around the outside. The fruit should be soft but still somewhat firm without any super soft areas.
- Check the color. If it is really dark, it may be over-ripe or starting to turn bad.
- Look for avocados that have a uniform shape and size and enough “meat” on them to make a good wedge out of.
How to Tell if an Avocado is Ripe
There are two simple tricks to know if an avocado is ripe, including:
- Press on the avocado all around. If it gives a bit without feeling soggy or super soft, it is likely ready to eat or will be shortly. If it is super hard, it is not ripe yet.
- The other trick is, use your finger and try to remove the little stem at the top. If the stem comes off easily, the avocado is likely ready. If it stays stuck, it is not ripe yet.
Best Way to Cut the Avocado Into Fries
- When you make avocado fries, it is best to cut it into wedges instead of trying to make thinner fries like you might with a potato.
- We recommend cutting the avocado all the way around starting at the top and working towards the bottom. You can allow your knife to stop at the pit and allow that to guide you all the way around.
- Once you’ve cut all the way around, you can use a twisting motion to gently pull the two halve apart. You can then use our knife to make roughly equal size wedges. To get the side with the pit, you can use a spoon to pop it out and then cut into wedges.
- Finally, use a spoon to carefully remove the wedges from the skin. Alternatively, you can remove the fruit from the skin first and then cut into wedges. Both methods should work, and it is really just a matter of what works best for you.
How To Make Avocado Fries in Air Fryer
When you want to make these tasty avocado fries in the air fryer, here’s what you need to do:
- First, cut the avocado into wedges that are roughly the same size (see above for details).
- Next, pour the milk into a small bowl and mix the almond meal, cornmeal, and seasonings in a separate bowl. Place them side by side.
- When ready, dip each avocado wedge in the almond milk then press it gently into the flour mixture to coat it on all sides. You can use a spoon to pour the mixture on top of the avocado which makes it easier and less messy!
- Lightly grease the air fryer basket with avocado spray and then place the avocado fries with some space in between in the basket. Finally, lightly spray the fries with some avocado oil.
- Air fry on 390F for 7 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until they reach your desired crispiness. Depending on the size of your air fryer basket, you may need to work in batches
- Alternatively, you can place the avocado fries on a nonstick baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly golden.
- Serve it with the best chipotle mayo!
