What are pizza rolls?
Pizza rolls are a convenient and tasty way to enjoy pizza at home, school, or work. They are simply sauce, cheese, and toppings rolled in a small section of dough.
They are easy to pack in a lunch box for a healthy, warm school lunch and make for a great snack on the weekends.
When you make pizza rolls at home, you have complete control over what you put in them and how you cook them. You can add extra veggies to give to your kids. You can also air fry them instead of deep frying them.
What you’ll need to make these
You can make these pizza bites at home with only a few ingredients. You can get many of them at your local store or make them at home. Here’s what you’ll need:
- pizza dough - you can use a store bought dough if you want or follow our easy two ingredient recipe Pizza Dough
- mozzarella cheese - if you want to make the recipe vegan, you could omit the cheese or use vegan cheese if you prefer
- marinara sauce - you can use store bought or follow our easy marinara recipe
- butter - if you are trying to make it vegan, you can use olive oil instead
- garlic powder- add a great flavor
- basil leaves - these are for garnish, you can omit if you can’t find them
How to prepare the rolls
Whether you use an air fryer or oven, the steps to get the pizza rolls ready are the same. Here is what you’ll need to do.
Start by knocking any air out of the dough and then use a rolling pin to roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface. You need to roll the dough into a rectangle that is about 1/4 of an inch thick.
Once the dough is rolled out, spoon the marinara sauce onto the dough. Leave about 1/2 inch of the edges intact. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese on top. You can add diced pieces of mushrooms, peppers, or onions if you want to here. Just make sure you do not overstuff or it will be hard to roll the dough!
Roll the dough up tightly starting on the longer side. Pinch each end to seal it. Finally cut into 10 equal pieces.
How to make this recipe in the air fryer
One of our favorite ways to make pizza rolls is in the air fryer. When you cook them in the fryer, they get a nice, crispy feel and taste to them. Here’s how to make them in the air fryer.
Preheat the air fryer to 325 degrees F and line the tray with parchment paper. Next, arrange the rolls on the tray, leaving about 3 to 4 inches space between them. They do expand!
In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder to melted butter. Brush the garlic butter on top and on the sides of each roll.
Cook in the air fryer for about 12 to 15 minutes or until you get your desired level of crispness. Once done, garnish with chopped basil or parsley.
Serve with your favorite dipping sauce. We love serving it with more of our homemade marinara sauce.
How to make this recipe in the oven
If you don’t have an air fryer or want to make a really large batch all at once, you can use your oven. Here’s how to do it.
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Then arrange the rolls on the prepared sheet pans leaving about 3 to 4 inches between the rolls. Make sure to leave some space because they will expand as they cook!
- Mix the garlic powder and melted butter in a small bowl. When well combined, brush the garlic butter on the tops and sides of each roll.
- Place the tray on the middle rack and bake for about 12 to 15 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
- Once they are done, garnish the tops with chopped basil or parsley and serve it with our homemade marinara sauce.

- Use a thin layer of sauce and cheese to avoid over-stuffing the rolls.
- If you use extra vegetables, make sure you mince them so they can roll easily and avoid over stuffing by using a very thin layer.
- If you choose to make these vegan avoid the cheese, use olive oil instead of melted butter, and consider adding a thin layer of minced veggies like onions, peppers, or mushrooms.
How to freeze the pizza rolls?
You can easily freeze the pizza rolls by allowing them to cool to room temperature. Once they are cool, we recommend wrapping them in paper towel sheets and placing them in a freezer safe bag. When you are ready to eat, you can place frozen rolls on a baking sheet and reheat or place them in the microwave.
How to reheat pizza rolls
To reheat, you can place the rolls in the microwave for about 1 or 2 minutes or until warmed through. You could place them in an oven set to 350 for about 10 minutes or until warmed through. Finally, you could use your air fryer to reheat them at 300 degrees for about 4 minutes.
What are pizza rolls made out of?
Pizza rolls are made with only a few ingredients. You’ll only need pizza dough, marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, some garlic powder, and melted butter. If you want, you can add a very small amount of minced veggies to get a little bit extra veggies in the rolls.
