What are Garlic Noodles?
Garlic noodles are a popular noodle dish that are savory and filling. You can find them at many restaurants that serve Asian inspired foods. This is very simple dish that uses some common ingredients to create a big flavor. And, because you can throw the ingredients into your Instant Pot, it is fast and easy to make garlic noodles at home.
Kickin Crab Garlic Noodles - Copy Cat Recipe
Kickin Crab is a popular restaurant near where we used to live in California. They serve garlic noodles that we get almost every time we would eat there. They are incredible with the combination of slightly sweet flavor of the hoisin sauce, a subtle spice from the garlic and the perfect level of salt and creaminess.
Their recipe is my inspiration for my garlic noodles. Since they are so easy to make at home, we can now have a very similar taste at home any time we want it.
How To Make Garlic Noodles
Garlic noodles are incredibly simple to make and only take a few minutes thanks to the Instant Pot.
First, chop the garlic into small pieces. You should have enough for about 2 tablespoons. Turn on Sauté mode and let the pot get hot.
Next, add the butter (or oil if you are keeping it vegan) and minced garlic and stir fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until it turns a light golden brown color.
When the garlic is ready, add the hoisin sauce or vegetarian oyster sauce and stir the mixture.
Next, break the spaghetti in half and spread them in one or two layers. If you use two layers, criss cross them.
At this point, do not stir any more. This is very important. You want to keep the noodles criss crossed on top of the sauce layer before you add the water. This allows them to cook in the Instant Pot without clumping together.
Finally, add the garlic salt and water but do not stir. Place the lid on the Instant Pot and lock it with the valve set to Sealing. Set the Instant Pot to manual high pressure and cook for 5 minutes.
When the timer goes off, allow a natural pressure release for 2 minutes and then quick release the remaining pressure. When the pressure is released, open the lid and stir the noodles and allow them to separate from each other.
Serve in plates or bowls and top with sesame seeds, green onions, and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese (optional).
Tips and Tricks for making Instant Pot Garlic Noodles
When making garlic noodles at home, here are some tips and tricks to make it easy and delicious:
- If you don’t have spaghetti on hand, you can use linguine, thin spaghetti noodles, angel hair pasta.
- If you prefer not to chop your garlic, you could use pre chopped garlic found in most grocery stores or use a garlic press to easily mince the garlic.
- You can easily Double the recipe . Remember the time does not change.
- Don’t stir the pasta once you add in the noodles and before pressure cooking it.
- If you are vegan, use olive oil or another oil in place of butter and use the vegetarian oyster sauce
- To add to the meal, you can top with veggies like broccoli, zucchini, or mushrooms.
What goes good with garlic noodles?
These noodles pair well with almost any vegetables. I recommend sauteing or steaming them prior to serving.
You can also serve garlic noodles with bread or garlic bread if you want to as well. Also, you can serve garlic noodles with other Asian inspired dishes such as our Ginger-Garlic Eggplant with Homemade Asian Sauce .
What veggies can you add to the Garlic Noodles Recipe?
This recipe is quite versatile so you can serve them with a wide range of veggies that will taste good with the noodles. Some suggestions include carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, broccoli, onions, or sugar snap peas. In most cases, you can saute the veggies on the stove top and then add them at the end.

Garlic Noodle without Oyster Sauce
Hoisin sauce is a great substitution for oyster sauce. But, hoisin sauce is a lot sweeter than oyster sauce. Oyster sauce adds a rich, salty flavor to the noodles, which you may prefer. You can use either and make excellent tasting garlic noodles.
What type of noodles are best for this Garlic Noodles Recipe?
One of the nice things about this recipe is you can use a wide variety of noodles to make these garlic noodles. I prefer Barilla spaghetti, which you can find at nearly any grocery store.
But, if you don’t have Barilla spaghetti on hand, you could use any brand of spaghetti, thin spaghetti, or nearly any long noodle. You can also use rice noodles if that is all you have, just adjust the cook time to 3 minutes of cooking on high pressure. Gluten - free noodles work well too .

We made this recipe for the first time this weekend. It is outstanding- super easy and delicious. We subbed in chicken broth on a 1-1 swap for water. This will be a permanent entry in our “fun weekend dinner” rotation going forward. Thank you!
JB says
I made this the traditional way, without the Pressure cooker. I did think it was too sweet. I added 6 cloves of garlic but couldn't taste the garlic. I added some sesame oil and chili flakes to counteract the sweetness. Next time I will use less hoisin sauce and add the sesame oil at the beginning.
Will make again with new additions.
Rebecca says
Don’t forget A-SHA ramen noodles! IMO, their noodles are the best. They’re coated with sesame oil & aged soy sauce and then air-dried. They work perfectly with this recipe. I use their Dan Dan noodles with this recipe but I’m sure other ones work as well.
It hadn’t occurred to me to use rice noodles. I think I’ll give that a go next.
Becky says
Sorry, but I was not a fan of this. The noodles were slightly under-cooked which was not a super big deal. However, We did not like the taste and it was rather bland even with all the garlic.
Bindu says
Made this with the recommended amount of pasta and water and it was very soupy after 5 min high pressure/2min natural release but the pasta was not cooked. I had to cook it for additional time and then boil off some of the liquid. Flavor was good though so would definitely try this again with less liquid and more time.
Ashley says
We love this! I always add a half head (or bag of coleslaw) of quick sautéed cabbage and a pound or so of shrimp, after the noodles are done. Which makes this a complete meal I feel good about eating two or three days in a row. We’re high altitude, so 8min HP with 2min NPR. Perfection.
Amber says
I made this and it was a total bust. My noodles were completely hard still and stuck together even with the 2 cups of water. I tried another 2 min high pressure- still hard noodles. I am adding more water and trying an additional 4 min high pressure but am expecting to throw it out :(
Stephen Appleton says
Absolutely awesome. So good to just eat on there own.
Gay Skrhak says
This recipe is great but it needs a little acid to break up the sweet like rice wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Also add some red pepper flakes for heat. I cooked some shrimp in a separate pan to have with and it was great!
Mon says
I have made most of your recipes and loved it. but in this recipe i didn't have hoisin or oyster sauce. so made hoisin sauce by following your recipe in comment. but the noodles taste is very very bitter. i tried adding brown sugar and sriracha but still doesn't taste good. what can i do?
Mary chambrella says
Love this recipe!! I use oyster sauce because my family doesn't like sweet noodles. Make this at least once a week. Thanks!!
Catherine Chatfield says
Would love to try but I don't have an IP and not about to buy another gadget. Why not include no IP users options for traditional cooking?
Anne says
@Catherine Chatfield,
It is an instant pot recipe. I would thing that you could make the sauce on the stovetop and mix cooked pasta into it.
zelda says
I am sure there are many such options out there. IP recipes are for those wanting to use a pressure cooker. Look for similar recipes that suit how you want to cook. You could also experiment with converting it to a stove top recipe.
M says
The taste is great but when I opened the lid it looked like soup. Am I using too much water? I did the 2 cups as suggested.
Soniya Saluja says
Hi M, sounds like you are using more water then suggested. Check how much spaghetti you are using
Sherry says
We loved this, including my picky 10 year old. I substituted sesame oil for the olive oil, and added a pound of large raw frozen shrimp to the Instant Pot. I steamed a bag of stir fry veggies in the microwave to mix in.
Jenny says
Made today but with regular oyster sauce. I used less than called for, but the dish came out too salty.
Kate says
Yummy, but I had to increase my cook time a couple minutes. Possibly because using linguine instead
LeeAnn says
Just now made this with rice linguini noodles (wide, flat) and adjusted to 4 min at HP, 2 min NR. Looked just a little soupy when I opened the pot but the sauce thickened as it cooled. Turned out perfect!
Marie says
I doubled the recipe but my noodles didn’t cook thoroughly. Hopefully I can still fix it. Flavor was good though!
Tiana Wanson says
Really good! Thinking of adding crushed peanuts and shredded carrots. I might add 1 to 2 minutes on the cooking time ours wasn't quite done.
Randi says
What if I don't have an instant pot? I am sure I could use the stove top. Right? How should adjust?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Randy, you ca totally make this on stove top too... just boiling your favorite noodles as per instructions. Make the sauce in a pan ( no changes) add the cooked noodles and enjoy. Hope this helps! Do share your feedback with us after you make it.
Jessica says
Can I add flank steak to this?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Jessica, we cannot suggest as we are a vegetarian blog. You can serve your choice of protein in the side for sure.
Sheila Nguyen says
Could I use regular oyster sauce instead of vegetarian oyster sauce?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Sheila, yes you can use regular oyster sauce . Just make sure you add less salt as the sauce is salty. Hope this helps?
Stacy Sheehan says
I made this exactly as written and it was delicious! Entire family loved it which is hard to achieve. A couple of days later my daughter asked for this for lunch and she helped me make it, but this time I doubled the recipe and added marinated chicken thighs at the end. Husband took leftovers to work for lunch. Yes, we love these garlic noodles!!?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Stacy, We are so glad to hear that you and your family loved it! Hope you try other recipes from our blog . As they all are kids approved! ??
Condy says
Amazing! I used extra chopped garlic and eliminated the garlic powder. Used veggie broth in place of water, and added a minced ghost pepper with the garlic. Your recipes are always stellar, thank you!

Hi Condy, so glad to hear that you love it! Hope you try other recipes form our blog.

Nudrat J. Khan says
This was a good recipe however a few people mentioned the salt content was too high and I ended up with the same result. I didn’t add any extra salt just the garlic salt and it was extremely salty. Also, the 5 minute timer was not enough bc the spaghetti noodles were half cooked. I added another three minutes and then did QPR as soon as the timer went off. That made the noodles just right in my instant pot. I plan on adding veggies and chicken to the leftovers tomorrow and maybe some sweet chili sauce to lighten the salt but look forward to making it again with the reduced amount. Thanks for a great recipe and all of the recommendations from the readers.
Anne says
Used whole wheat spaghetti and came out undercooked. Should I add additional time for different types of pasta?
Anne
Sue Marie says
UPDATE: I made it again the next day with hoisin sauce and it was just as good. I didn't bother adding the parm. I made a double batch and had leftovers this time. This is one dish that has more flavour the next day. I also have a question about the noodles. I've used spaghetti both times but you also mention rice noodles and reducing the cooking time. Have you ever done it with Udon noodles? If so, what's the cooking time?
Krista Regier says
Thank you!
Sue Marie says
I made this last night and it's now one of my favs. I thought it had great flavour before I added the parm (when testing the doneness of the noodles), but I wanted to make the recipe as written the first time. I used oyster sauce this time but will try hoisin the next as I always have both on hand. The only change I will make is that I found it a bit too salty. I'd either use 1/2 the amount of garlic salt or sub for garlic powder.
Krista Regier says
This sounds so delicious! I do not have an Instapot - how would I cook it without? Casserole dish in the oven?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Krista, you can make this recipe on stove top. Boil the noodles in a pot as per instructions. Make the sauce in a pan.when the noodles are cooked add it in the sauce and mix well. Enjoy ?
Stewart Cressin says
Just ran out of spaghetti. Think I could use egg noodles?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Stewart, if using egg noodles pressure cook for just 3 minutes. Do share your feedback with us after you try it.
Selina says
Just double checking. If I double the recipe and use 16 ounces of spaghetti then I’m to use four cups of water? Right?
I’m looking forward to making this.
Thank you!
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Selina, yes! If doubling the recipe add 4 cups of water . Enjoy??
sauteesoiree says
Incredible recipe! I used Mueller's Protein Spaghetti and the timing was perfect. Since I used a 12 oz package of pasta, I made 1 and 1/2 times the sauce and used a combo of hoisin and oyster sauce. Served with a little chile crisp as well as the scallions and sesame seeds. I will be adding this to my Asian night menu for sure!
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Sauteesoriee. So glad to hear your feedback, hope you try other recipes from our blog.
Cyn A. says
Made this today with whole wheat pasta upped the time 1 minute. Did not have Hoisin or all of the ingredients to make it so I used Teriyaki...delish! Next time I will have all suggested ingredients and steamed broccoli, onions and snap peas! Thanks!
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Cyn, thanks for sharing your experience with us... do make it with the sauce suggested.. you will love it?♀️❤
Claudette Bruley says
Could I use rice noodles instead of spaghetti noodles? And if so would you change the amount of liquid and the cooking time?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Claudette, yes you ca use rica noodles the amount of ingredients remains the same, but the cook time changes it 4 minutes. Do try and let us know your experience.
Pat Ware says
Just made this yesterday. Incredibly easy and delicious. I will make this often. Thanks!

Lopa says
Sooooo yummy! This is the 2nd time I’ll making it, am adding steamed broccoli & baked tofu cubes once it’s done cooking. I’ve shared this recipe quite a few times. Thank you so much!
A. S says
This was a great recipe. I would change the cook time to 6 minutes high pressure, it was a bit undercooked for our liking. But very savory and easy.
Chelsea says
Can I add a type of meat to this recipe? Like steak or chicken?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Chelsea ,yes you can add thin pieces of preferred protein after the garlic is golden brown and proceed.Add 1/4 cup extra water.
Bryce says
Did you simply double or quadruple the ingridients?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Bruce, you can easily double the recipe
Jolene says
Do you think I could quadruple the recipe? Doubled it only fills halfway so if I quadrupled, I wouldn’t have to do the recipe x 6. Would I need more time if I quadruple?
Soniya Saluja says
Yes you can if you have a 8 qt. Make sure you break the noodles and spread it. Time remains the same.
Jolene says
Could I substitute anything for the honey in the homemade sauce?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Jolene, you cab use tsp if sugar or agave or maple syrup.
Lindsey Larson says
Hi! What about feta cheese instead of the parmesan Romano mix? Add in broccoli too?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Lindsey, you can skip the cheese and add your choice of veggies.. broccoli and mushrooms go very well in it. Hope you give it a try... Xoxo
Debbie Doyle says
Made this tonight. Loved it! Added popcorn chicken after the noodles cooked.

I have neither sauce - substitute? Soupy?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi liz, try to make your own hoisin sauce. 1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons rice vinegar
2 teaspoons sesame oil
If you can't make dur to any Ingredients missing, save the recipe and make it when you can. Its totally worth it.
