Why you will love these Air Fryer potato chips
What’s not to love about air fryer chips? These chips satisfy any crunchy, salty craving and are much better for you than deep fried store bought chips.
Just like store bought chips, you can add seasonings to change the flavor. In the mood for a southwest style? Add in chili powder and squeeze of lime juice. Like a bit of heat? Add in fresh black pepper. The possibilities are almost endless.
We have also perfected a copycat Chick Fil A sauce! This delicious sauce is perfect for dipping your potato chips in.

For the basic recipe, you really don’t need much. Here’s what you’ll need on hand.
- Large potatoes - You can use russet potatoes, yellow, or white.
- Olive oil or cooking oil spray - You only need a small amount of oil to give them a bit of crispiness when frying.
- Ice cold tap water - Make sure it is very cold so you can properly soak your potatoes.
- Salt to taste
- Fresh parsley - These are for garnishing the top of the chips.
For the copycat Chick Fil A sauce (click for recipe), you’ll need:
- BBQ sauce - You can pick your favorite brand but a mild, sweeter version works well.
- Mustards - You’ll need both yellow mustard and Dijon mustard.
- Mayonnaise - We recommend regular mayo, but a lighter version may work.
- Honey
- Lemon juice - You can use either fresh or bottled.
How to make Air Fryer Potato Chips
To make the best air fryer potato chips, follow these steps.
First, wash the potatoes thoroughly under cold water and scrub off any debris stuck on the skin. You do not need to peel the potatoes.
Next, use a mandolin to slice the potatoes to 1/8th inch slices and then rinse them in water again to get rid of any excess starch.
Fill a large bowl with ice cold tap water and soak the slices for 15 minutes. Next, drain the water and refill the bowl with new ice cold water and soak the slices for another 15 minutes.
Once they have soaked a second time, preheat the air fryer to 360 F or 180 C. Next, drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a kitchen towel. After laying them out flat, spritz the potatoes with cooking oil and sprinkle on some salt.
When they are ready, place them in a single layer in the basket without overcrowding them. Fry them for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping mid way through at about 10 minutes. They will turn golden brown around the edges when they are ready.
Once the chips are cooked, carefully remove them and garnish with parsley or chives. You can serve them as is or with your favorite dipping sauce.
To make the Chick Fil A sauce (click on link for recipe), mix all the ingredients for the sauce in a small bowl. Serve the sauce in a small bowl for the perfect dipping experience.
Can I bake these Chips
Yes, you can bake the chips. They won’t get as crispy, but they should bake up nicely.
To bake, preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Next, spray a cookie sheet or flat baking dish with nonstick spray. When the pan is ready, place the prepared chips on the baking sheet. Finally, bake the chips for about 10 to 12 minutes or until they are slightly golden brown and appear to be crispy.
Tips to make the crispy potato chips
Here are some great tips to make these potato chips crispy and delicious:
- Although any potato can yield crispy chips, it's best to select potatoes that are used for baking. Use fresh potatoes, older potatoes tend to have from fructose and glucose which turn chips brown when cooking them.
- Make sure to soak the potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes to help remove excess starch and help them crisp without burning.
- Do not over crowd your air fryer basket. Leave a bit of room and cook in batches as needed.
- Make sure you spritz the potato chips with a small amount of oil to give them the crispy exterior.
- Slice the potato chips to no more than 1/8th an inch to help them crisp up.
Why soak potatoes in water before frying them
Soaking the potatoes in cold water helps to remove excess starch. It can also help prevent them from burning in the air fryer.
Why are my air fryer chips soggy
You need to make sure you are drying them with a kitchen towel before serving them. Soaking them for 30 minutes also helps to remove extra starch, which can retain moisture and cause your chips to be soggy. Also, if you stack them when cooking, they can trap moisture and cause soggy chips.
Are air fryer chips healthier than fried or oven chips
Yes! They use a small fraction of the oil needed in a traditional deep fryer. They are just as crispy and delicious as fried chips without the added grease and unhealthy oil.
Also, when you make chips at home, you can control how much salt you use. Store bought, fried chips are loaded with salt, which makes them much worse for your heart health.
Recipe variations
You can flavor air fryer potato chips in a variety of ways. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Salt and pepper
- Salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin, and a small splash of lime juice for a southwest flavor
- Top with minced or crushed garlic
- Sprinkle with some parmesan cheese before cooking for a crispy cheese coating
