I usually pack it in my kids lunchbox and they love it! It makes for a wholesome meal perfect for a filling breakfast or a lunch.
So now that the schools have started and I and my boys are slowly getting into our daily routine. One of my most important tasks is to plan and execute their daily lunch meals easily. So here is where this Instant pot Vermicelli bowl- comes in ; ) Honestly, I always make sure I have Vermicelli in my pantry, cause it is a life -saver when I run out of ideas for breakfast or my kiddos lunchbox idea. The Semiya Upma doesn’t need much to work on, just add vegetables for some nutrition and you have a one-pot meal ready for breakfast or lunch in less than 10 minutes! Can I make this Semiya Upma recipe a Roadtrip friendly/ Travel-friendly/finger food?
Well if you are thinking about this will be a little messy while traveling or if your toddlers won't be able to eat it properly in school. You can transform these humble Vermicelli into these tasty bites No- Fry Vermicelli Fritters/Pakoda . Perfect for kids Lunch-box, picnics, potlucks it travels well too!
Did you know Vermicelli is also known by other names – Sevia, Seviya, Semiya?
Vermicelli is also known by other names – Sevia, Seviya, Semiya. This is just something that you can make – quick and easy, with readily available ingredients and something different from the regular stuff. In the northern part of India, you get handmade vermicelli, know as Javein, which ladies break with hands in winters, sitting in sun. These are made of normal wheat flour or plain flour. To make them last longer, these are dry roasted & kept in airtight jars. We don’t get these here in the USA ;) so I used the next best thing MTR vermicelli or Bambino Vermicelli / Bambino upma but you can use any brand. A simple recipe that everyone in my family loves.
Can I switch things/ ingredients around in this Semiya upma?
The beauty of this Instant Pot Vegan Vermicelli Bowl - Semiya Upma recipe is that you can use whatever vegetables you have on hand. I used carrots, bell peppers, and corn but there is no end of possibilities. Use what I did or add some extras or change it up completely. You can add Vegetables like Peas, colorful bell peppers, carrots, corn, edamame, green beans and even spinach.I sometimes add tofu or paneer in it.
Which Vermicelli / Semiya can I use for this recipe?
Before I get to the recipe, a few words on the main ingredient: There's a huge variety of vermicelli noodles the world over, and while they are all thin, long noodles, some of them share very little else in common. Essentially, when looking for vermicelli noodles for Indian or Middle Eastern cooking, you want to find ones made with wheat flour. I've used broken, roasted vermicelli.
What if I don't have an instant pot?
Never fear. I have included stovetop instructions too and it’s still pretty easy. You’ll just have to stir it occasionally ;)
HOW TO MAKE SEMIYA UPMA - VERMICELLI UPMA?
To make this delicious semiya upma in your instant pot, place the inner liner in the Instant Pot and turn pressure cooker to sauté mode. Let it heat add olive oil to the pot add the mustard seeds and let it crackle . Next add the curry leaves , onion and green chili and saute it for 2 minutes. Add in the Veggies and give it a stir .Add in the salt , turmeric powder , roasted vermicelli and the water. Stir it to combine everything well.
Put the lid on the pot and make sure the vent is set to sealing. Set it to pressure cook on high for JUST 1 minute. After the pot beeps, do a Quick Release. fluff the vermicelli with a fork and serve it .
How to Roast vermicelli?
If you have the unroasted ones at home no worries you toast them at home and store it (I usually do), just a little bit of toasting brings out so much flavor. Add a few teaspoon of olive oil or ghee in a heated pan and roast the vermicelli. Keep stirring the vermicelli on a medium flame till its golden brown.

Soniya Saluja says
Try one more time on normal mode. It's well tried by many and none of them got burnt notice. Let me know your feedback if you make it again.
Swati says
Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes the ring and seal was in the correct place. Is the pressure set at high or normal? Mine was set at high. Thank you
Soniya Saluja says
No problem... here to help you!It is made on the default setting HIGH. So I am wondering too now. what brand of vermicilli did you use ? were they roasted?
Swati says
I made the vermicelli upma with exact measurements twice. Both times got burn message. The second time I increased the water too. What am I doing wrong?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Swati, sorry to hear that, if you got burnt message even after adding extra water then you should check the sealing ring or whether you are turning the nob probably on sealing .
CD says
Do you buy dry vermicelli nests and then break and roast them in oil before using for the recipe? Which oil is best for roasting it this way?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi CD, looks for MTR roasted vermicelli or Bambino roasted vermicelli brand in your local indian grocery store. If you find the regular one that's fone too.. just roast them in few tsp.of oil for few minutes until light golden brown. Hope this helps
DR says
I love this recipe! Very simple and easy to make. I skipped onions as I didn't have any in the house. It came out very good. It was a little sticky, so I added a half teaspoon of oil and fluffed it so they don't stick. If skipping onions, next time I will add some raisins. Also, it tastes better with a squeeze of lemon on top. And I might add roasted cashews at the end, instead of cooking with them as they became soft and soggy.
Swetha says
Hi Sonia,

This looks delicious! Does all the water absorb or is there liquid left in the pot?
Thank you :)
Ranjini says
There was liquid left in mine and it was all packed together and not fluffy once cold. What did I do wrong?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Ranjini, It's a perfect recipe as it's tried and reviewed by many.. I can't pin point on a reason why there was liquid and why they we're sticky. I have specifically used Bambino vermicelli brand and they are roasted. If your vermicelli are not tasted they will stick together and add accurate water. Hopw they turn out perfect next time you make it :)
Thanks for trying and sharing your experience with us.
Soniya Saluja says
Hey mindy sorry for the delayed reply :( the vermicelli absorbs all the water and all you get is this delicious goodness !

Do you buy the vermicelli already roasted? Or do you have to roast it? This looks good but never tried
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Kim, if you have a Indian store near your place you can search for bambino or MTR brand roasted. I prefer these 2. If you don't find the roasted ones..you can saute them with the veggies for few mins till they are golden. Hope this helps!

Prathibha says
Thanks for quick IP recipe, I don't have Manual option in my IP, what option should I keep instead of Manual.
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Prathibha
Manual button is an all purpose button. Use the manual button if a recipe says to pressure cook on high pressure for a specific number of minutes. Use the “+” and “-” buttons to increase or decrease the cooking time. Newer Instant Pots now have a Pressure Cook button instead of the manual button.
Ashwini says
Vermicelli got stuck to the bottom...I used mtr...any tips?
Soniya Saluja says
Hi Ashwini, sorry to hear that it got stuck on the bottom.. all I can suggest is use roasted vermicelli and try to increase the water little bit and open immediately after venting the pressure out , don't let it sit in the pot.
Ruchisvegkitchen says
