We prefer to use the pressure cooker function than the rice function, here is why
- First, different varieties of rice have different cooking times, thus the pressure cooker function is better than the preset rice function which typically takes 40 mins to cook rice irrespective of the variety of rice.

What is the Rice to Water ratio for cooking Brown Rice in the Instant Pot?
Guess what? The rice to water ratio to cook the perfect al dente rice in an Instant Pot is ALWAYS 1:1. Since the Instant Pot seal is tight and gives high pressure, there is barely any evaporation as compared to a stove top. Thus the 1:1 ratio works perfectly. The only thing that changes is the time needed for the water to work it's way through the bran layer.
Do I need natural pressure release to cook Instant Pot Brown Rice?
Be patient. Let the Instant Pot release the pressure naturally. The process of releasing the pressure naturally is very important because the steam and moisture in the Instant Pot continues to cook the grains. It takes 15 minutes of natural release for cooking Brown Rice. If you do a quick pressure release, the rice will be under cooked. So patience is the key for perfect results.
How to avoid a burn when cooking rice in Instant Pot
One of the most important step to avoid a burn is to ensure we rinse the rice at least 3-4 times before you add it to the instant pot. If you follow the steps mentioned in this recipe, you will end up with fluffy brown rice every time you try to make it.
How to cook Instant Pot Brown Rice?
- Rinse the rice 3-4 times to reduce the starch.
- Use the 1: 1 rice to water ratio
- Use High Pressure option for 15 minutes. Do not use the electric pressure's RICE button.
- Once the rice is done, use 15 minutes natural pressure release to ensure the rice cooks thoroughly.
- Fluff the rice using a fork. This ensures that your rice grains don't break
How long does cooked Brown Rice last in a refrigerator?
Brown rice can be made ahead of time and can be used for meal prep options. The cooked Brown Rice can last you through the week in an air tight container.
Can I Freeze Brown Rice?
While we do not recommend freezing Brown rice, if you had to do it for any reason, it should easily last a couple of months.
How do I reheat Brown Rice?
Reheating brown rice that has been kept in the refrigerator is not a big chore. You can transfer the rice to a microwave friendly container and sprinkle the rice with around 2 tea spoons of water. This ensures that the brown rice does not become too dry. Heat it for around a minute.

Ingredients
Instant Pot Basmati Rice / Zerra Rice
- Basmati rice- 1 cup
- Water -1 cup
- Oil- 1 tsp
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
- Green cardamoms pods - 2 (optional)
- Bay leaf -1 (optional)
Instant Pot Brown Rice
- Brown rice- 1 cup
- Water -1 cup
- Oil -1 teaspoon
Instant Pot Jasmine Rice
- jasmine rice -1 cup
- Water -1 cup
- 1 teaspoon oil
Instructions
INSTANT POT BASMATI RICE
We used Basmati Rice to make the Cumin Rice or Zeera Rice served at the Indian restaurants.Even if you decide to skip the spices, they rice to water ratio will remain the same.
- Heat Instant Pot to “Saute.”
- Add a teaspoon of oil.
- Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds, green cardamom pods and bay leaf. Give it a stir.
- Add a cup of rinsed Basmati rice.
- Add a cup of water and give it a stir.
- Close the lid. Turn valve to Seal. Set Instant Pot to “Pressure” on high pressure for 6 minutes.
- When the timer goes off, wait for approximately 10 minutes for Natural Pressure Release.
- Serve it warm.
INSTANT POT BROWN RICE
- Heat Instant Pot to “Saute.”
- Add a teaspoon of oil.
- Once the oil is hot, add the Brown rice
- Add a cup of water and give it a stir.
- Close the lid. Turn valve to Seal. Set Instant Pot to “Pressure” on high pressure for 15 minutes.
- When the timer goes off, wait for approximately 15 minutes for Natural Pressure Release.
- Serve it warm.
INSTANT POT JASMINE RICE
- Thoroughly wash the Jasmine Rice 3-4 times.
- Heat Instant Pot to “Saute.”
- Once the oil is hot, add the Jasmine rice
- Add a cup of water and give it a stir.
- Close the lid. Turn valve to Seal. Set Instant Pot to “Pressure” on high pressure for 6 minutes.
- When the timer goes off, turn off the 'Keep Warm' function and wait for approximately 10 minutes for Natural Pressure Release.
- Serve it warm.
