What are tortilla chips?

Tortilla chips are crunchy, southwestern style of chip often used in nachos or as a substitute for potato chips. The tortilla chips can use either corn or flour tortillas, a bit of oil, and salt. You can then dip them in salsa, guacamole, or other southwestern sauces.

To make the basic recipe, you only need three ingredients, but if you like, you can add additional seasonings to give them added flavor.

  • Tortillas - You can use either white corn or yellow corn.

📖What flavors can I create with these tortilla chips

When we make tortilla chips, we like to switch it up sometimes. Here are six easy variations that requires you to add just a bit of seasoning to them:

  • Spicy – For a neutral spicy flavor, add a dash of smoked paprika and black pepper.
  • Sweet – Sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar for a sweet flavor.

How to Store

When you make tortilla chips at home, they are best served fresh. That’s part of the reason we love making them!

But if you are making them ahead for a party, you certainly can! To do this, cook the chips and then let them cool completely on a wire rack like you would cookies. Once cooled, place them in an airtight container.

You might find that adding a paper towel between layers of chips can help keep out moisture and keep the chips crispy.

💭Should I use cooking oil spray?

Yes, you do need a bit of oil when air frying. Cooking spray works great, or you can spritz them with olive oil or other oil using a spray bottle. Both methods work great!

💭How can I create a large batch with my air fryer?

For best results, we recommend cooking in batches. But if you need to make a large batch and you are short on time, follow these easy steps:

  • Set the air fryer on 400°F (200°C), no preheating required, and set the cooking time for 4 minutes.
  • Next, open the basket after that first time, remove any chips that are eventually cooked already. Give a good shake to the chips in the basket. Close the basket again and keep air frying for 3 or 4 minutes until crispy and golden.
  • Make sure to check the chips, if some chips cook faster than others, remove them from the basket.
