How to make Fried IP Rice
The Instant Pot makes cooking fried rice very easy. We have used the pot in pot method to minimize the clean up needed while making these recipe. If you are not comfortable with Pot in Pot, you can make Rice directly in the inner pot of the electric pressure cooker.
To make fried rice in the Instant Pot with uncooked rice, start by washing your rice. Rinse the rice multiple times under cold water until the water runs clear and is no longer cloudy. The more of the starch you remove, the fluffier and less sticky the rice will become.
After the rice is rinsed, add the water to the inner pot and place a trivet on the bottom. Add the rice and more water to a stainless steel container. Place the container on the trivet in your Instant Pot.
Now secure the lid on the Instant Pot, set it to “Sealing,” and cook for 5 minutes. Allow the pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes when it beeps before releasing the remaining pressure.
Carefully remove the rice container and the trivet from the pressure cooker and keep it aside.
Drain the water from the inner pot and place it again in your instant pot .
Then, set your Instant Pot to Saute mode. When it gets hot, add the olive oil, sesame oil, and garlic and cook until the garlic becomes golden-brown (about 1 minute).
As the garlic cooks, keep stirring and add in the vegetables, rice, rice vinegar, soy sauce, salt and black pepper. Mix the rice and other ingredients well. Cook the rice for about 1 to 3 minutes or until the ingredients are warmed through. Serve the fried rice hot.
Fried Asian Rice Recipe Pro Tips
When I make fried rice, I like to use either jasmine or long grain rice. Both these varieties hold up really well in fried rice.
Some other tips for making fried rice:
- always rinse your rice several times to remove as much starch as possible
- use day old rice for fried rice
- add other veggies or ingredients to the fried rice if you want to fill out the rice a bit more to make it a meal
- If you prefer softer veggies, you can steam veggies before hand
- Add mushrooms, tofu, or bean sprouts or any of your leftover veggies. This recipe is highly flexible.
- Do not substitute the sesame oil with anything else because it gives this dish Chinese flavors along with the soy sauce and rice vinegar.
- Don’t overdo it with the soy sauce. The goal is not to make the rice turn dark brown – if you do so, you’ll end up with an incredible salty dish. Add just enough soy sauce that your rice turns mildly brown.
