Jeera rice so fluffy and aromatic, simple enough for a weeknight, special enough for guests. One pot, minimal ingredients, and ready in under 30 minutes. If you've ever had it at an Indian restaurant and wondered how to get that fluffy, perfectly spiced rice at home, this is your recipe.

What went wrong
My first few Instant Pot Jeera Rice attempts were always a disaster. It was newly launched, fancy buttons, different modes, rice mode or pressure cook - what to use? Rice was either sticky or mushy, sometimes burnt. I was struggling to get this easy 5 ingredient recipe right.
The problem wasn't the recipe, it was me trying to rush the process. I was skipping the toasting step, not rinsing the rice properly, and guessing the water ratio. Every shortcut showed up on the plate.
So I started tweaking one thing at a time, the water ratio, toasting the rice, the pressure release, until I finally mastered it before sharing on the blog. This recipe is everything I learned through those failures. I'm sharing every tip so you get it right the very first time.

Ingredients to make Cumin Rice
- Basmati rice I use aged long grain Basmati Rice. it is drier, less starchy, and gives you those A good quality white basmati rice that has been aged.long separate grains jeera rice is known for. Brands like Royal (available at Costco), Daawat or Tilda work beautifully. Avoid regular long grain or jasmine rice, the texture just won't be the same.
- Jeera or cumin seeds the star ingredient. I always toast it before adding rice.
- Ghee or Oil I always prefer to make cumin rice in ghee because the aroma hits different. Any neutral oil will also work for this recipe
- Whole Spices Bay Leaf, Cardamom & Cloves , these are optional but I highly recommend, they just add a depth of flavor and a nice aroma.
- Water I highly recommend you to stick to the ratio, because if its too much the rice will be mushy and if its too less it will stick to the bottom of the pot and burn. So curb your urge to eyeball the water ratio in this recipe.

Instant Pot vs Pressure Cooker vs Stove Top Rice to Water Ratio
Depending on how you plan to make Jeera Rice the rice to water ratio is different.
- Instant Pot rice to water ratio
- 1: 1 rice to water ratio
- 6 minutes high pressure
- 10 minutes natural pressure release
- Stove top pressure cooker rice to water ratio
- 1:1 rice to water ratio
- 3 minutes high pressure, turn off gas in 3 minutes before any whistles.
- Stove top Pan
- 1:2 rice to water ratio
- cover lid and cook on medium heat until all water is absorbed.
How to make Jeera Rice in Instant Pot?
- Prepare the ingredients - My most important advice to you here is to make sure you thoroughly wash the rice a few times until the water runs clear. This step will make your rice less starchy and sticky.
- Temper the spices - Using the saute function, heat oil in the pot. Throw in the cumin seeds, cloves, cardamom pods and a bay leaf. Stir for 30 seconds.
- Toast the rice - From my failed experiences in the past, this is the most important step when making Jeera Rice in Instant Pot. This step ensures the firm yet tender texture of rice without breaking it apart. Add the washed rice to the pot and toast for a couple mins by gently stirring it an making sure the rice is evenly coated with oil and toasted.
- Pressure cook - Add the water and salt, give it all a stir and scrape the bottomto make sure there is no rice stuck to the bottom. Close the lid, seal the vent and pressure cook on high for 6 minutes followed by a natural pressure release. It takes about 10 minutes for the pressure to build. If you are making a large batch of rice then manually release the pressure after 10 mins.
- Garnish and serve - Open the lid carefully. Allow the steam to escape and gently fluff the rice with a fork. Garnish with fresh cilantro or a lemon wedge if you like and serve with Dal Tadka, Paneer Makhani, Dal Makhani, Dhaba style Palak Paneer.

How to make Jeera Rice on Stove Top Pressure Cooker?
Before the Instant Pot, this was my go to methos to make Jeera Rice. Everything remains the same except that you pressure cook the rice on medium heat for 3 minutes. There won;t be any whistles in 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, switch off the heat and allow the pressure to release naturally.
How to make Jeera Rice on a Stove Top Pan?
I still sometimes cook my rice in a pan or a wok. I temper the spices, toast the rice and the most important thing here is the ratio. It's 1:2. Once you add water and salt, cover the pan with a lid and cook rice on low heat until all the water is absorbed by the rice. Fluff the rice with a fork, garnish and enjoy.

Anvita's Top Tips
- Wash the rice thoroughly to remove starch, to ger fluffy rice.
- Toast the rice for firm yet tender rice.
- Do not change with the rice to water ratio.
- Allow the pressure to naturally release.
Burn Message
If you change the rice to water ratio and do not scrape off the bottom of the pot pan after toasting the rice, you can expect a burn message.

Instant Pot Rice Button or Pressure Cook?
I prefer pressure cooking the rice instead of using the rice mode. In rice mode, although the rice is cooked in low pressure, it uses a sensor to decide when the rice is done, you do not control the time. My experience has been that it is inconsistent and with pressure cooking, I know exactly how long the rice takes to cook. No guess work.
