What are air fryer apple chips?

Air fryer apple chips are a healthy, homemade snack. You use your air fryer to make crispy chips using fresh apples that you get either at your local orchid, farm stand, or store. Apple chips are a popular alternative to potato chips or other high calorie, low nutrient snacks.

What do I need to make this apple chips recipe?

You need very little to make these delicious and nutritious snacks. You’ll need:

  • Large sweet apples
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Pinch of saltQuintessential Fall fruit.

How to make apple chips in the air fryer

It is super easy to make these nutritious chips in your air fryer.

Start by thoroughly washing your apples. Apples from a farm are usually covered in pesticides. Apples at your grocery store almost always have a waxy coating you need to remove. Either way, don’t skip this step!

When cutting the apples, you can either core them or you could leave the seeds in the apples. Either way works. Once they are washed and cored, use a mandolin or sharp knife to make rounds that are about 1/8 of an inch thick.

Preheat your air fryer to 390 degrees F. If you are using both cinnamon and salt, mix them in a small bowl. Otherwise, rub the cinnamon into the apple slices and then arrange them on the bottom of the basket. Place only as many slices that it takes to form a single layer without overlapping the slices.

Cook the apple slices for 8 minutes and flip halfway through the cooking time. If they are crisp enough to your liking, you can remove them from the fryer and repeat as needed for the remaining apples.

If you want them to be crispier, add a small amount of time to the air fryer. We recommend only adding 1 minute at a time until the desired crisp level is reached.

Can I make Apple Chips using an Air Fryer Lid or Crisp Lid

Yes, if you are looking to make a small instant batch of these delicious chips, you can use your Instant Pot or Mealthy MultiPot with the Air Fryer Lid or Crisp Lid attachments respectively.

Once the apples are washed and cored cut the apple into 1/8 of an inch slices. you can either rub cinnamon and salt on the slices or skip this step altogether.

Place the trivet into the inner pot with the frying basket on top of the trivet. Arrange the apple slices in a single layer without over crowding them. You will have to work in batches here.

Plug in the lids and cook the apple chips at 375°F (190°C) for 4 minutes. Flip the side using tongs and cook for another 4 minutes until you see the chips turn slightly brown.

Once done, remove the lid and enjoy them warm and crisp.

Pro tips and tricks

Follow these tips and tricks to make the best chips in the air fryer:

  • If your apples are really moist, you may need to add a little bit of extra cooking time.
  • The final color of apple chips depends on the type of the apple used. The crispier the lighter, the sweeter the darker, the whiter the softer.
  • Slice the apples very thin, a mandolin is helpful for this, but a very sharp knife can also work well. About 1/8 of an inch is ideal.
  • Don’t worry about making uniform shapes, but do try to get the slices to be the same thickness.
  • Don’t skip thoroughly washing the apples to remove the wax or pesticides

How do I store apple chips?

To keep your apple chips fresh and crispy, you’ll need to store them in an airtight container. Though you can use a bag for them, I recommend a container to help prevent them from getting crushed. You should be able to store them for about 5 to 6 days on the counter.

Before storing the chips, make sure they are completely cool. If they are still warm, they can collect condensation, which will cause them to become less crispy when you store them.

How to select the best apples for Apple Chips recipe

The best apples are fresh ones that you can get either at a local orchid or farmer’s stand. During the fall, you can usually find fresh apples that are grown locally and often offer the best flavor.

If you aren’t near a farmer’s market or orchid, you can still use grocery store apples. When you pick apples, look for ones with shiny skins that are free of blemishes or bruises. You should also feel them to make sure they are firm and not squishy.

What can I serve these with?

Apple chips are like potato chips, you can pretty much eat them right out of the container. The main difference being these actually have vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are good for you.

But like potato chips, you don’t always have to eat them plain. You can also add them to your favorite trail mix, morning breakfast granola, oatmeal, salads, or yogurt. You could also dip them in your favorite dips or sauces.

You can easily pack them into your family’s lunch boxes, bring them on a hike, or bring them to your next casual get together.
