What is a Cauliflower Steak?
Cauliflower steak is a vegetarian solution to the traditional steaks. It requires you to slice a head of cauliflower into several thin slices and air fry or bake them.
Our cauliflower steak uses a combination of turmeric and paprika to create an earthy, spicy flavor that goes well with a lot of your favorites.
We also present two different cooking methods, including the air fryer and oven.

?Ingredients to make cauliflower steaks
When you make cauliflower steaks in the air fryer or oven, you’ll want the following ingredients on hand:
- Cauliflower head - You really can’t use precut options here, since you want it to form a full steak.
- Oil - You can use olive oil or other light tasting oils for this.
- Spices - For a tasty flavor, we use salt, garlic powder, black pepper, turmeric, and smoked paprika. You could use your own variation of spices to change up the flavors some, but we find this combination tastes great and our families love it.
For garnish, we also add:
- cilantro
- pomegranate seeds
- lemon wedges
?How to cut cauliflower steaks
When you make cauliflower steaks, it is best to start with a small to medium sized head.
First, remove the stem and leaves from the bottom of the cauliflower head. Once removed, place the head flat on a cutting board.
Next, use a sharp, large chef or butcher’s knife to slice the head in half. You can then use the same knife to make roughly 1 inch wide steaks out of the cauliflower.
How to air fry cauliflower steak in Air Fryer
Once you have the steaks cut, here’s how to air fry them.
First, mix the spices and oil in a small bowl and then brush it on each side of the steaks.
Next, place the steak in a single layer in the air fryer basket and air fry for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F. As they cook, make sure to flip them half-way through. They will develop a nice, crispy edge and a slightly golden brown appearance when done.
Finally, garnish with cilantro , pomegranate seeds, and lemon and serve with avocado crema as desired.
?How to roast cauliflower steak in the oven
First, preheat your oven to 500ºF (260ºC). As it heats, prepare the cauliflower steaks by mixing up the seasonings and oil and brushing each side of the steaks.
Once the oven has heated, place the cauliflower steaks on a rimmed baking sheet and cover with foil.
Finally, bake on the bottom rack for 5 minutes, carefully remove the foil, and then bake for another 10 minutes, flipping halfway through the baking process.
?Seasoning Variations
Cauliflower steaks are pretty versatile, which means you can add just about any seasoning combination you like. You can also top them with your favorite dipping sauces, marinades, gravies, and sauces.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Use southwest seasonings for a fajita or taco inspired flavor
- Top with sauces, like BBQ, honey mustard, or our Copycat ChicFilA sauce.
- Skip added spices and use only salt and pepper for a simple flavor that you can dress up with your favorite dressings
- Marinade the steak in teriyaki before cooking
?️What to serve with cauliflower steaks
You can serve cauliflower steaks either with an avocado crema or as an entree with a side of roasted veggies or a yellow lentil dal with lemon rice or quinoa.
What does cauliflower steak taste like
Our cauliflower steaks have a warm, earthy flavor to them because we use paprika, turmeric, and garlic powder for seasonings.
You’ll find they go well with Indian dishes because the flavors are similar.
When you use the air fryer, you will probably notice a slightly crispier outside compared to the oven. If you have an air fryer, we highly recommend using to for that reason, but either way, you’ll get a delicious tasting steak following this recipe.
Should I remove the core when slicing the cauliflower
No! You want to keep the core in the cauliflower when slicing and cooking the steaks. The core is what hold it altogether. All you need to remove are the leaves and the very base of the core holding the leaves on. Otherwise, leave the core intact.
Storing leftovers
You can easily store cauliflower steak. To do this, first let them cool completely. Next, place the cooled steaks in an airtight container. Finally, place the container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
When you are ready to reheat, you can place them in a warmed oven until they heat through.
We don’t recommend freezing them since the steaks lose a lot of their firmness when frozen and can get sort of soggy and unappetizing.
Pro Tips to make the best cauliflower steaks

- Make sure to cut the steaks into consistent widths to help cook the steaks evenly.
- Don’t remove the core since it holds the steaks together.
- Mix and match spices to make the steaks into your own creation.
