What are creamy cheese stuffed mushrooms?
Creamy cheese stuffed mushrooms make a great appetizer, snack, or even side dish to your main meal. In their basic form, they are small mushrooms stuffed with some cheese and seasonings that you then bake in the oven.
When we make creamy cheese stuffed mushrooms, we use a combination of cream cheese, parmesan cheese, and breadcrumbs combined with seasonings to make one of the best tasting cheese stuffed mushrooms we have ever had.
Ingredients needed to make the best cheesy stuffed mushrooms
When you make creamy stuffed mushrooms, you will want to have the following ingredients on hand or consider using some substitutions.
- Mushrooms - We use either baby bell or cremini mushrooms.
- Butter - You can use either salted or unsalted, but using salted may make it too salty for your taste.
- Garlic cloves - You’ll want to use either minced or crushed garlic.
- Onion - You can use your preferred variety, such as yellow or white.
- Kosher salt - as per taste
- Black pepper powder - A dash!
- Cream cheese - We use regular, full fat cream cheese for the best creaminess, but you could use lower fat versions if you prefer.
- Freshly grated parmesan cheese - We find this tastes best, but you could use shredded or grated parmesan from your preferred brand.
- Panko breadcrumbs - We like to use panko when we make this, but regular breadcrumbs can also work.
- Fresh parsley - You’ll need this for the mix and for adding a garnish.
How to prepare mushrooms for stuffed mushrooms
- When you make stuffed mushrooms, the key is to carefully remove the stems from the bottom.
- First, you should use cool water to rinse off the debris and dirt from the mushrooms themselves.
- Once you have the dirt off, you can use a spoon or knife to carefully remove the stem from the bottom of the mushrooms.
- The underside of the mushroom cap should have a bit of a cavity to it. You don’t want to dig into it too much because you may break the cap, which will make it impossible to use the cap for the recipe.

FAQs about creamy cheese stuffed mushrooms
Some answers to frequently asked questions about creamy cheese stuffed mushrooms have answers below. They may help you when making the best stuffed mushrooms at home.
How to stuff mushrooms
Stuffing mushrooms is relatively easy. You just need to follow these basic steps:
- First, wash the mushrooms and remove all dirt
- Next, use a spoon or knife to carefully remove the stem from the mushroom cap
- As you remove the stem, you can dig a bit into the cap, just be careful not to remove too much
- Once you have the stem removed, place about a tablespoon of the stuffing into the bottom of the cap
- Using breadcrumbs or another thickener can help keep the stuffing in place and prevent it from melting out into the pan or oven
What kind of mushrooms should I use for creamy cheese stuffed mushrooms?
We use baby bella or cremini mushrooms. We find they have the best ability to keep their shape and won’t get too wet or moist when we bake them.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! You can easily make the mushrooms ahead of time, but we do recommend stuffing and baking them fresh when you use them. Instead of fully assembling the mushrooms, baking, and then storing, it works best to store the stuffing in an airtight container for up to 2 to 3 days ahead of when you want to use it. This reduces the amount of prep you need to make the mushrooms.
How to reheat stuffed mushrooms
If you have left overs or fully made them ahead of time, you can easily reheat them in the oven. Just warm your oven up and then heat the stuffed mushrooms until they have warmed through.
Why are my stuffed mushrooms watery
Stuffed mushrooms can get watery for two main reasons: soaking and low cooking temperatures. When you make stuffed mushrooms, you should:
- Cook them at a high temperature
- Rinse, don’t soak, them clean
Taking these two steps should help prevent watery mushrooms.
How to serve
Stuffed mushrooms make a great appetizer. They are perfect for parties, gatherings, or just as an easy, simple snack. They have a bit of an Italian flavor to them, so they will work well served with other Italian dishes.
