Why these Marzipan Cookies are a must-try

You may ask, "Why should I try these Marzipan Cookies?" And to that I say, "Why not?" These delicate heavenly treats will immediately transport you to the European Chirstmas markets, blending a delectably soft texture with the distinct, robust flavor of true marzipan.

It's only when you try these cookies you will understand why these are my favorite cookies and what sets them apart from any other marzipan cookies you have ever tried.

I personally love that these are guilt-free, low on sugar and high on almond content. I absolutely love how easy these are to make and I don't need any fancy ingredients. These cookies don't even call for the baking powder or baking soda and yield such good results. These can be the purest form of Marzipan cookies. These are egg-free as authentic Marzipan is does not contain egg and they are gluten-free. Best of all everyone who has ever tried these cookies when I bake them, is a fan of these cookies.

But before you get started, lets decode Marzipan.

Decoding Marzipan: Almond Paste vs. Marzipan

German Marzipan stands distinctive and superior to it's US and UK counterparts due to its high almond content and lower sugar ratio. It's more moist, softer and more malleable then other Marzipans.

American marzipan, on the other hand, has a lower almond content and is stiffer sue to its high sugar content. In the US, you might find almond paste a suitable replacement due to its soft texture designed for baking, bearing less sugar and more almonds.

However, if you want a good quality Marzipan, making your own Marzipan is a worth while endeavor as it's super easy.

How Almonds Define the Flavor of Marzipan

The predominant flavor in marzipan comes from almonds, giving it that distinct nutty and subtle sweetness. The choice of almond, whether it's finely ground almond flour or almond meal, greatly impacts the texture and flavor of your marzipan. Using blanched almonds (almonds without the skin) ensures a smoother, more delicate flavor, while almond extract accentuates the almond taste, making your cookies truly remarkable.

Guess what, our main ingredient for these Marzipan Cookies is blanched almond flour. Let's take a look at the other ingredients.

Ingredients to make Marzipan Cookies or Almond Flour Cookies

  • Blanched Almond Flour : This is our main ingredient for these almond cookies. Do not mistake this for Almond Meal which is coarser and made with almond with skin.
  • Powdered Sugar : Also known as confectioners sugar. This works best for this recipe for the smooth texture. Avoid using crystalized sugar for this recipe.
  • Almond Extract : To enhance that almond flavor!
  • Butter Stick : I used a vegan butter stick in this recipe. However if you are not vegan you can use a regular butter stick. Make sure the butter stick is at room temperature. Remove it out from the refrigerator a few hours before you make these cookies. Do not use melted butter for this recipe.
  • Salt : Just a tad bit salt will help balance the sweetness of the cookies.
  • Slivered almond for garnish

  3. In a bowl, add the butter stick and confectioners sugar and cream the butter with a fork or spatula, until well blended, fluffy and paler color.

Serving Suggestions with Marzipan Cookies

Marzipan cookies make a delightful addition to any coffee or tea break. These sweet bites are perfect with a cup of espresso or caffe latte. For a tea lover like me, a cup of Earl Grey or Chai can be a delightful companion too. My son loves them with a glass of milk.

Additionally, they make a decorative and mouthwatering addition to dessert tables at festive gatherings or family events. With their delicate almond taste, these cookies also pair upbeat with some dessert wines! Enjoy!

Difference between German marzipan and UK/US marzipan

German marzipan is quite unique in taste and texture. It's higher in almond content (at least 50%) and lower in sugar compared to its UK or US counterparts, giving it a richer, deeper almond flavour. UK and US marzipans typically only contain around 22% almond content.

The consistency differs, too. German marzipan is softer and easier to shape. In contrast, UK and US marzipan can be a bit tougher and is usually not eggfree.

If you want a decadent Marzipan cookie experience, high almond content marzipan is the way to go!

What is the difference between almond paste and marzipan?

While both almond paste and marzipan are almond-based and sweet, almond paste is nuttier, less sweet, and has a coarser texture, making it suitable for fillings.

Marzipan, on the other hand, is sweeter, smoother, and more pliable, making it ideal for covering cakes and creating decorative elements.
