What are Cabbage Steaks?
Cabbage steaks are relatively thick cuts of a cabbage head prepared and served similar to a traditional steak. You can add additional seasonings and fats to give the steaks extra flavor.
Our cabbage steaks combine a bit of olive oil with some spicy pepper to give the steaks a bit of a kick.
And we give you two ways to make them. Even if you don’t have an air fryer, you can still make them in your oven with no issues.
Also, our steaks are vegan, so if you follow the diet you won’t have to modify it at all.
Cabbage steak is also a healthy main dish. The fiber and nutrients of the steaks will keep you full and give you the boost your body needs to stay healthy.
?What ingredients do you need to make the best roasted cabbage steaks
In order to make the best roasted cabbage steaks, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- Cabbage - You want to use about a medium head so you can chop it into about 3/4 inch slices.
- Olive oil - You could use butter if you prefer or keep with oil to make it vegan.
- Pepper - We use both black pepper and crushed red pepper flakes, but you can omit to make it less spicy.
- Fresh Italian parsley - You could use curly or flat parsley for some add freshness.
- Seasonings - We use both onion powder and garlic salt for some added flavor.
?How do you cut cabbage in to steaks?
- First, when you prepare the cabbage, cut the stem off so it is level with the bottom of the head.
- Next, cut the cabbage into 3/4" thick steaks. Make your cuts go from from top to bottom and keep the internal core intact.
- If you cut out the core the leaves may not stay put as well.
?How to Air Fry Cabbage Steaks
We love making the cabbage steaks in the air fryer because it is fast and gives them a bit more of crispy texture. When you are ready, here’s what you need to do:
- First, mix together the oil, garlic salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, and parsley in a small bowl.
- Next, brush the oil mixture liberally on all sides of each cabbage steak.
- When the steaks are ready, pour 1/4 cup water into the bottom of your air fryer basket and then preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees for 5 minutes.
- Once the air fryer is ready, place the cabbage steak into the preheated air fryer basket, return it to the air fryer, and set the timer to 8 minutes. For crispier edges, add 2 more minutes and check again.
- Finally, repeat the cooking process with the rest of the steaks.
?How to bake cabbage steaks in an oven
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can make the steaks in the oven. First, mix the spices with the oil and brush on both sides of each steak. Once they are ready:
- Spray a large baking sheet with cooking spray and then bake for 20 minutes in a preheated oven set to 400°F.
- Next, half way through cooking, rotate the pan and continue to roast for another 15 to 20 minutes or until golden, lightly charred and fork tender.
- Serve it with our delicious creamy Avocado Crema
?Pro Tips
When making these cabbage steaks follow these easy pro tips.
- Pour 1/4 cup water underneath your air fryer basket to help make sure they cook up tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.
- Don’t overcrowd the basket, but if you can fit two steaks at a time, go for it.
- At the end, you can broil the steaks in the oven to give them a crispier texture.
